Survival Guide for New Runners' Parents
Welcome to the beginning of the Eureka High School Cross Country Season. Below you will find some valuable information to help you through out the next few months. If you have any questions please feel free to talk to any of the coaches.
Parent Information
-
Runners will be responsible for passing on any information that the coach tells them at meetings. To help with this please talk to your child after practice and ask for updates.
-
The team website will be used to post important information for parents. Please check the website frequently for news and information.
Practices:
-
August 8th is the first day of practice.
-
Practice is usually over by 5:30pm.
Summer Camp
-
Runners are invited to participate in our annual camping trip to Washington State Park.
-
Camp is from July 17th to July 20th.
-
The cost of camp is currently set at $150. We will be taking the first 12 athletes to turn in a $50 deposit If we have 12 people attend camp then the price will probably decrease. The cost goes directly towards renting the campsite and cabins for camping.
Races
-
The coaches will decide who races on the varsity, JV, and freshman teams. We use a combination of time trials and workout results to help determine who races at which level.
-
Meets are usually held on Saturdays, but there are a few that are during the week. Please click here for the schedule.
-
If your child attends a meet then they must either ride the bus home or ride with a parent or other legal guardian. Athletes are not allowed to leave the meet with friends or other family members.
Uniforms and Other Gear
-
Runners will receive a racing singlet, shorts, and warm up top and bottom. Please make sure that your child has all of these for every race. They also need to make sure they have all of these when they leave each race.
-
Runners will need a pair of spikes. These can be bought from places such as Big River Running Company, Fleet Feet, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc. Please know that a $40 pair of spikes works just as well as a $100 pair of spikes.
-
Runners will need a good pair of running shoes. These can be found at any of the above listed stores.
Pasta Parties
-
The night before each race one parent will usually host a pasta party. These parties are set up and run by the parents. Usually each age group is responsible for bring certain items while the host is usually responsible for the pasta.
-
We repeatedly hear from parents about how well behaved and courteous our runners are while they are at these parties. You will get more information about the pasta parties at the parent meeting at the beginning of the season.
-
Usually both the boys and girls teams will attend the parties.
Food
-
Your child will learn what they should or should not eat on the day of a race. They should eat before they race, but it should not be a big meal. You need to be slightly hungry when you race.
-
Good choices are bagels, bananas, oatmeal, and granola bars.
Practices
-
All athletes are expected to attend every practice.
-
If an athlete must miss a practice it must be approved by the coaches.
-
Any missed practice that is not approved will be considered an unexcused absence. This could result in dismissal from the team.
If you have any questions that this guide did not answer please feel free to email any of the coaches.
